How to Estimate the Project Area

To accurately estimate the amount of paint you’re going to need, you’ll want to take some measurements of the project area first.

Begin by measuring the perimeter of the room then measure the wall height. Multiply these two measurements. Next, subtract the measurements of the windows and doors. For reference sake, the average door is 20 square feet and the average window is about 15 square feet.

The next measurement you need to take is for the trim. Include all the trim in the room including baseboards, moldings, and windows and door trim. The average trim measures about 6 inches, so multiply your measurement by 0.5 to get the square footage of the trim.

Finally, if you’re going to paint the ceiling, take a measurement of the length and width and multiply the two together to find the square footage. Take your measurements to the paint store and have one of the paint experts help you get the right amount of paint for your project.
