Protect the Fixtures
Paint spills happen, so the first step in preparing is to remove everything from the area. It’s best to move everything out of the room. If this isn’t possible move it all into the center of the room and cover it with drop sheets. Cover lights and fans with plastic and remove all cover plates from electrical outlets and plugs.
Repair Cracks and Crevices
Remove loose paint and examine your walls for imperfections. Repair cracks with a filler and smooth everything down to a fine finish. Cover the new repairs with a primer. New paint will highlight flaws in the wall so make sure that you’re meticulous with the repairs.
Clean Wall Surfaces
Sweep and vacuum baseboards and cornice and then wipe the entire wall surface with a damp cloth to remove any dirt. If you’re painting your kitchen you may have to use soapy water to clean the walls as they may harbor a slightly sticky residue from cooking vapors.
Apply Masking Tape
Wait for the walls to dry. Then apply masking tape along all the trim. Press the tape down so that it adheres to the surface, preventing any paint from leaking in.
Apply Primer
Primer prepares your walls for the paint. Use a 2-inch brush to paint all the edges then fill in the center of the wall with a roller. When the primer is dry, you’re ready to paint the walls and enjoy your new space.
